MAC Fluidline [Jul 13 2009 / 4:45pm]

off_highstreet

[_tortured]
Just wondering if anyone else uses MAC's fluidline? I bought it and have been using it in 'Blacktrack' for a while, mainly because it has such good staying power... much better than any pencil liner I've tried, and I am so useless with liquid!

HOWEVER I have a bit of a problem with it - I'm not sure if it's just the one I bought, or if everyone has this problem? I find the formulation is so dry, not gel-like as I expected it to be. I have to rub my brush back and forward in it a lot, and it's ruining my 266 brush.

Is it supposed to be this hard and flaky? I find it really difficult to work with... I can't seem to put it on in one even sweep - I have to build it up and by doing this, it doesn't look like a particularly solid black. But as I said, it's staying power is the best, so until I find a decent alternative I will persevere!

Does anyone know if it's mean to be this dry? Or are there any better alternatives that glide on rather than make the brush stick to my eye? Are Bobbi Brown's gel eyeliners any better?

Thanks!

Typographic Help / Critique [Jul 13 2009 / 10:16am]

graphicdesign

[magnusarias]
I am currently taking a master's level typographic class and I've come to the conclusion that my peers are not doing nearly a thorough enough job of critiquing. In the world of design, typography is my worst piece and I absolutely must improve if I'm going to become any stronger in the field. Seeing as I love all the people in this community, I come with humility asking for some thorough (but gentle) advice on a project I'm doing.

Hello my wonderful designers. Just few questions to ask...

1. What editorial/magazine fonts are in right now? For title and body especially.
2. What font would you use for a brochure? Would you stick to sans-serif or serif fonts?

Thanks!

More Fangirl Fun: Giulietta Masina [Jul 13 2009 / 9:50am]

[yrlover]
Though there's really no need to defend this one, I think I'll add to the recent influx of tribute/defense posts of so-called 'hipster icons'-- the Anna Karina post was wonderful, as was the Audrey Hepburn, but if they're too conventional (let's just throw the word 'hipster' out the goddamn window already, puh-leeeease. Hipsters, as defined by pop culture at large, are self-reflexive and self-contained, defining themselves by what they buy-- liking something that's obviously awesome, no matter how cliché it is, does not a hipster make.), then here's another woman of mid-century foreign film, slightly less well known but no less worthy of mass idolatry-- by request, my personal favorite--

Giulieta Masina!

Gyms -- weight training. [Jul 13 2009 / 1:44pm]

off_highstreet

[surfacetoair]
Hi everyone,
I'v never used or been to a gym before, as I tend to stick to running. I'd like to tone up thighs, legs, and upper arms, but have no idea how to use all of the weight machines, let alone about what is good form. Do gyms usually go over that stuff during the induction? The whole reps business confuses me too. I don't understand the point of reps - eg. 5 x 10. Why not just count upto 50?

Secondly, can any Londoners recommend a good, nice, clean (hygienic), cheap gym not to far away from the City/east London? Also one with classes like spinning, though classes aren't a huge priority. I'd love to go to Cannons City branch, but it's too expensive.

ETA: Anyone who uses chains like Virgin, LAfitness, etc. - how much do you pay per month (as a non-student)? What do you think of them?

I'll give some gyms a call as soon as I can.
Thank you!

university problem/advice [Jul 13 2009 / 11:06am]

off_highstreet

[herphotolife]
ok, so this might be a bit long...

i applied for unis in early january and got an offer from them all. i really want to go to london for uni, (my favourite place in the world :D) so i applied for london met and roehampton. london met was a back-up and roehampton was my favourite because of the campus. no other unis in london showed up on the course search for the degree i want to do: major english language, minor media studies. i got an offer from all the unis i applied for: london met, roehampton, hertfordshire... 2 others, can't remember. i declined them all except roehampton and don't have a back up. mainly because the grades are the same for all of the offers so if i don't get the grades for roehampton, i don't see the point in having a back up that won't let me in, either. so anyway, up til now i have been ecstatic about going to roehampton. the campus seems fantastic, etc. i've applied for accommodation and student finance, all that. anyway, 2 weeks ago i went to london for a week with my boyfriend to celebrate my 18th and we stayed in east london. i fell in love with the place, and we went a bit south (roehampton is south) to see that area. i didn't like the south at all. (i haven't been to visit roehampton, the open days were not close to when i was going down to visit and i didn't have the money for trains; i live in the north and it's expensive to get down there.)

when i came back i looked at the East London website. they don't do english language & media studies as a combined degree, but they do english language & cultural studies; which i'd be happy with. basically, i really want to apply and go to East London university; but of course, ucas deadlines are over, i've accepted my offer/got a place at roehampton, and i doubt there's anything i can do.

i've been researching a bit about Ucas extra and clearing. if i decline my offer at roehampton and go through Ucas Extra to get in east london university, do you think that'd be a good idea? the only reason why this makes me nervous is because if i decline my acceptance for roehampton (can i do that now i've accepted and gone through the accommodation?) and go through ucas extra and/or clearing and don't get into East london uni - i'll be gutted, obviously, because i've lost my place at roehampton and didn't get into East London uni. :( and then i'm worrying about student finance/accommodation and stuff 'cos it'd be really late.

tbh, i'm kinda accepting the fact that i can't do anything about it & i should just forget about it & go to roehampton in september. but if there is something i can do, i'd just like to know what my options are.

thanks <3
